Concept art is creating ideas that have never been in existence, that will be incorporated into a project. It is a form of illustration used to convey an idea for use in films, video games, animation, comic books, or other media before it is put into the final product. Concept artists drive the design that essentially fits into any narrative.
Concept art is broken down into three main categories; character design, prop design and environment design. We take a look at Environment Design through the work of Nigerian digital artist Godwin Akpan. Digital Environment design involves carefully creating environments for characters to roam. It is essentially “world building”. Whether it be wild terrains, city streets or even cities in the future, there are no true limits.
To be a successful environment artist you need a keen eye for design and understand basic elements like plants, animals, nature and geology. Every environment artists needs to know how to digital paint and has a strong understanding of perspective. Environment artists also need to be quick with their work and generate as many creative ideas as possible and make imagined worlds into a reality.
